In the quiet town of Colonial Heights, Virginia, the life of 16-year-old Ian Noah Butler, a male Caucasian, was tragically cut short on Christmas Eve of 2017. Known for his love of baseball and a heart that always put others first, Ian was at a gathering with friends when the festive evening took a dark turn.
A man, later identified as 23-year-old Jeffrey Kyle Stephenson of Prince George, arrived at the residence.
Stephenson, who was an acquaintance of the victim, produced a firearm and pointed it at one of Ian's friends. In a selfless act of bravery, Ian intervened to protect his friend and was fatally shot in the process. He was transported to a local emergency room by a private vehicle but succumbed to his injuries.
Shortly after the shooting, Jeffrey Kyle Stephenson was taken into custody by the Colonial Heights Police, with assistance from the Prince George County Police Department. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Stephenson was held without bond at the Riverside Regional Jail.
In September 2018, Jeffrey Kyle Stephenson faced justice for his actions. In an unusual legal arrangement, Stephenson pleaded not guilty but agreed to allow prosecutors to present their evidence without rebuttal. A Colonial Heights Circuit Court judge found him guilty of second-degree murder. As a result of a pre-determined agreement between the prosecution and the defense, Stephenson was sentenced to 17 years in prison for the death of Ian Noah Butler. The motive for the shooting remained unclear, as there was no known disagreement between Stephenson and Butler.
