In the quiet vicinity of Farmville, Virginia, a dedicated Virginia State Trooper, Lucas B. Dowell, a 28-year-old male, lost his life in the line of duty on the night of February 4, 2019. Trooper Dowell was part of a tactical team assisting the Piedmont Regional Drug and Gang Task Force in executing a search warrant at a residence in Cumberland County.
Shortly before 10 p.m., as the tactical team made entry into the home, they were met with gunfire from an adult male inside. In the ensuing exchange, Trooper Dowell was struck. He was rushed to Southside Community Hospital in Farmville, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries. A four-year veteran of the Virginia State Police, Dowell was remembered for his strength of character, valor, and sense of humor.
The suspect, identified as 44-year-old Corey Johnson of Cumberland County, was fatally wounded when other members of the tactical team returned fire. Johnson was the sole occupant of the residence at the time of the incident and died at the scene. As the only suspect was killed during the exchange, there were no subsequent arrests made in connection with Trooper Dowell's death.
