In a tragic turn of events on May 7, 2019, 23-year-old Tavario E. Gates of Richmond, Virginia, a Black male, was found deceased in his car from a gunshot wound at 1120 Courthouse Road in Chesterfield County. The investigation into his death revealed a complex and ultimately fatal scenario that unfolded as a result of a planned act of violence. Gates, along with three other individuals, had allegedly conspired to shoot a person in a vehicle that was parked on Ronaldton Road.
During the
ensuing exchange of gunfire, a tragic miscalculation occurred. A bullet fired by one of the occupants of the vehicle Gates was in ricocheted off the car's windshield frame and struck him, leading to his death. This unintended consequence transformed a criminal conspiracy into a homicide investigation, with the perpetrators becoming responsible for the death of one of their own.
In the days following the incident, Chesterfield Police made several arrests in connection with Gates's death. Deonte S. Thomas, 24, Jamaar L. Townes, 25, and Travion L. Hargrove, 23, were all taken into custody. Thomas and Townes were arrested on May 9 and May 10, respectively, while Hargrove turned himself in to authorities on May 10. The three men faced a series of serious charges, including felony homicide, conspiracy to commit a felony, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
