In a quiet Burke, Virginia neighborhood, a domestic disturbance shattered the evening calm and ended in a tragic loss of life. Patricia Marie Bounds, a 67-year-old woman, was killed on Monday, October 21, 2019, in her home on Wicklow Drive. The incident, which unfolded around 9:11 p.m., also claimed the life of her 19-year-old nephew, Sean Patrick Bailes.
The events began when police received a call about a family member being threatened with a gun. An ongoing family issue had escalated, leading to a violent confrontation. During the chaos, one adult male managed to escape the house and call for help. When Fairfax County Police officers arrived at the scene, they were met with gunfire from inside the home. The gunman, identified as Patricia's 36-year-old son, Marcellus William Bounds IV, fired a shotgun at the officers, striking one officer's shield and causing non-life-threatening injuries to two officers.
Following the initial exchange of gunfire, Marcellus Bounds barricaded himself inside the residence, leading to a standoff that lasted for over four hours. Special Operations Division and SWAT teams responded to the scene, but attempts to negotiate with him were unsuccessful. Eventually, officers forced their way into the home.
Once inside, they discovered a grim scene. Patricia Marie Bounds was found deceased in a bedroom, and Sean Patrick Bailes was found dead in a bathroom. Both had been shot. The suspect, Marcellus William Bounds IV, was also found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The investigation concluded that Marcellus shot and killed his mother and nephew before taking his own life. The case was investigated as a homicide, and authorities assured the public that there was no ongoing threat.
