On a day meant for celebrating love, a quiet home in Midland, Virginia, became the scene of a heart-wrenching tragedy. On Valentine's Day in 2020, six-year-old Wyatt Norwood, a male, was found shot to death in his family's residence. The devastating discovery was made by his father, Joshua Norwood, when he arrived home from work, flowers in hand for his wife.

Upon entering the house on Elk Run Road, Joshua Norwood was immediately met with gunfire and sustained a gunshot wound to the head. He then found his wife, 34-year-old Jennifer Norwood, and their young son, Wyatt, both deceased from gunshot wounds. The couple's older son, 17-year-old Levi Norwood, was identified as the suspect after he confronted and shot his father before fleeing the scene.

A manhunt for Levi Norwood ensued, and he was apprehended the following day in North Carolina after he attempted to shoplift from a store. Authorities located the car he had reportedly stolen, a 2007 Toyota Camry, at the time of his arrest. Levi Norwood was subsequently charged with two counts of murder for the deaths of his mother and younger brother.

In August 2022, Levi Norwood pleaded guilty to one count of first-degree murder for his mother's death and one count of second-degree murder for his brother's death. In exchange for his plea, prosecutors dropped an attempted murder charge related to the shooting of his father, as well as auto theft and weapons charges. In February 2023, he was sentenced to life in prison plus an additional 40 years. Due to his age at the time of the crimes, he will be eligible for parole after serving 20 years of his sentence. Tragically, approximately two months after the murders, Joshua Norwood took his own life.
