On a tragic Friday night, June 5, 2020, the life of Robert Wayne Williams, a 38-year-old white male, was cut short in Bassett, Virginia. The Henry County Sheriff's Office received a call about a shooting at an apartment complex on Grace Drive at approximately 10:40 p.m. Upon their arrival, deputies discovered Williams just inside the doorway of an apartment, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Despite the immediate life-saving efforts of the deputies and the Henry County Department of Public Safety, his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead at the scene. The medical examiner would later confirm that the cause of death was gunshot wounds and officially ruled the manner of death as a homicide.
The investigation into the shooting quickly gained momentum as authorities began to piece together the events of that evening. The Henry County Sheriff's Office identified 25-year-old Douglas Hampton Gillespie of Bassett as a person of interest and sought the public's help in locating him. As the investigation progressed, other persons of interest were also identified and located by law enforcement. The diligent work of the investigators led to significant developments in the case.
Within the same month, the investigation culminated in arrests and charges. Douglas Hampton Gillespie was apprehended in Live Oak County, Texas. He faced charges of second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and was set to be extradited back to Virginia to face the allegations against him. In connection with the same incident, the Henry County Sheriff's Office also announced that they were searching for two other suspects, Daniel Fish, 37, and Ashleigh Nicole McCallister, 23. Both Fish and McCallister were also wanted on charges of second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
