In October 2020, the life of 25-year-old male, Brian Trotter, an aspiring rapper from Triangle, Virginia, known as Kent Won't Stop, was tragically cut short. On October 17, 2020, he was last seen by his father leaving his home with his friend of over a decade, Robert Deupree Avery Coltrain. Trotter's family reported him missing that same day, sparking a frantic search and a social media campaign to find him.
The grim discovery was made a week later, on October 25, in Miami, Florida. Florida Highway Patrol responded to a single-vehicle crash involving Coltrain's Acura. A foul odor and flies around the car prompted a search of the trunk, where authorities found Trotter's body wrapped in fabric. An autopsy later revealed that Trotter had died from multiple gunshot wounds. The Miami-Dade Medical Examiner's office ruled his death a homicide.
Robert Coltrain, then 25, was arrested at the scene and initially charged with second-degree murder and illegal transportation of human remains. The investigation determined that the murder had occurred in Prince William County, Virginia, before Coltrain drove to Florida. Subsequently, in May 2021, Prince William County authorities charged Coltrain with murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
While the motive for the killing remained unclear, the case proceeded through the justice system. On June 28, 2022, Robert Coltrain pleaded guilty to first-degree murder. On July 7, 2023, he was sentenced to 75 years in prison, with 30 of those years suspended. Following his arrest, it was reported that Coltrain had called Trotter's sister to apologize for his death.
