On the evening of November 24, 2020, 48-year-old Lamark Andrae Williams, a Black male, was found deceased in a room at the Super 8 Motel on Candlers Mountain Road in Lynchburg, Virginia. An investigation revealed he had sustained a single gunshot wound to the chest. Mr. Williams, known to friends and family as 'P-nut' or 'Nut P,' was a native of Petersburg, Virginia.
The Lynchburg Police Department quickly identified a suspect, 24-year-old Ishmael Bailey of Richmond, Virginia, who was taken into custody at the scene. Initially, Bailey claimed he had gone to the motel to meet Williams for help with unemployment benefits and shot him in self-defense after Williams allegedly made a sexual advance. However, his story contained inconsistencies, and he later admitted to a different series of events.
Further investigation revealed that Bailey had gone to Williams's room with the intent of exchanging sex for money. When Williams refused to pay him, Bailey threatened him with a firearm. The situation escalated, and Bailey shot Williams when he continued to refuse the demand for money. Bailey was subsequently charged with first-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a murder, and attempted robbery. He later entered into a plea agreement and was sentenced to 25 years in prison with an additional 28 years suspended.
