In the quiet neighborhood of Springfield, Virginia, the morning of May 26, 2021, was shattered by an act of brutal violence that claimed the lives of a distinguished military couple. Brenda McDaniel, a 63-year-old retired Army colonel and nurse, and her husband, Edward McDaniel Jr., a 55-year-old active-duty Army colonel and physician, were fatally shot in the front yard of their home.
The attack was shockingly swift and occurred at point-blank range, leaving a community in disbelief and mourning the loss of two individuals who had dedicated their lives to service.
The investigation into the double homicide quickly revealed that this was not a random act of violence. Fairfax County police identified a connection to a dispute and an attempted burglary that had been reported at the McDaniels' residence just two days prior. This earlier incident had already prompted a police investigation, and authorities soon believed the same individuals were responsible for the murders. The suspects were identified as Ronnie Marshall, 20, and D'Angelo Strand, 19. It was discovered that the suspects were co-workers of a relative of the victims.
