In a quiet Springfield, Virginia home, a tragic scene unfolded on April 27, 2023, ending the life of 38-year-old Meskerem Belachew Solomon. The grim discovery was made by the family's housekeeper in the basement of their residence on Wild Spruce Drive. Responding to a 911 call around 3:45 p.m., Fairfax County police officers found Meskerem, her brother Amanuel Belachew Solomon, 31, and her husband, Tiku Berhane Gebreeyesus, 47, all deceased from gunshot wounds.
The preliminary investigation by the Fairfax County Police Department swiftly pointed to a double murder-suicide. Detectives believe that Gebreeyesus shot his wife, Meskerem, and his brother-in-law, Amanuel, before turning the gun on himself. A firearm was recovered at the scene in the basement. While Meskerem and her brother suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body, Gebreeyesus was found with a single gunshot wound.
At the time of the horrific incident, a nanny and the couple's two-year-old child were present in the home but were thankfully unharmed on an upper level of the house. Two other children of the couple were not at home at the time of the shootings. Authorities have assured that all the children are safe and being cared for by family and friends. The investigation into the circumstances that led to this devastating event is ongoing, with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner set to confirm the official cause and manner of death for all three individuals. As the case has been classified as a murder-suicide, there have been no arrests, and there are no outstanding suspects.
