On a summer evening in Yorktown, Virginia, the life of 44-year-old Floyd Lee James Jr. was tragically cut short. On Friday, July 23, 2021, law enforcement responded to reports of gunfire in the 2900 block of George Washington Memorial Highway. Upon arrival, they discovered a violent scene where two individuals had been shot.
James, a resident of Williamsburg, was one of the victims. He was swiftly transported to a local hospital, but his injuries proved to be fatal.
A 4-year-old boy was also wounded in the shooting. Fortunately, the child's injuries were not life-threatening, and he was reported to be in stable condition.
In the wake of the shooting, the York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office launched an investigation that quickly led to an arrest. Adrian Vonshae Pope, 33, who resided at the home where the incident occurred, was taken into custody. Pope faced a litany of charges, including second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, shooting in a public place, destruction of property, child neglect, and reckless handling of a firearm. Following his arrest, Pope was incarcerated at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail. Law enforcement officials assured the public that there was no ongoing threat to the community.
