In the late hours of October 30, 2024, the community of Yorktown, Virginia, was shaken by an act of violence that claimed the life of 19-year-old Elysiah A. Lee-Jordan. The fatal incident unfolded just before midnight at the Yorktown Square Apartments, located in the 200 block of Barham Boulevard. Lee-Jordan was discovered by deputies from the York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office with two gunshot wounds.
Despite the immediate response, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene, marking the first homicide in Yorktown for the year. His 24-year-old sister, Dania Davis, was also a victim in the shooting, sustaining a gunshot wound to her leg. She was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
The investigation into the shooting led to the identification and subsequent arrest of two suspects. The first arrest was made on November 7, when 26-year-old Jafay Jabarre Moore of Newport News was located and taken into custody in Sumter, South Carolina. He is facing charges of murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and reckless handling of a firearm. Following Moore's arrest, the investigation continued, leading to a second arrest on November 16. Dashawn Gwaltney-Bassett, a 27-year-old from Newport News, was also charged with murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, willfully discharging a firearm in a public place, and reckless handling of a firearm. Gwaltney-Bassett is currently incarcerated at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail.
Elysiah A. Lee-Jordan was a 2023 graduate of Lafayette High School, where he was remembered as a dynamic member of the school community. He served as the captain of the step team and was a proud player on the football team, wearing the number 18 in honor of his uncles. Known for his infectious smile and ability to bring joy to those around him, he was a cherished son, brother, and friend. He had a passion for 90s R&B music and was a dedicated fan of the Washington Commanders. His family and friends remember him as the life of every party, a talented cook, and a kind-hearted individual who is deeply missed.
