In the early evening of May 2, 2022, a distressing discovery was made in the parking lot of the Montpelier Shoppes in Hanover County, Virginia. An adult male, later identified as 81-year-old John Slaw of Montpelier, was found unconscious on the ground next to a vehicle. The call came in to Hanover County deputies at approximately 6:09 p.m., drawing them to the 16000 block of Mountain Road.
Upon their arrival, the deputies found Slaw suffering from what appeared to be a gunshot wound.
A gun was also located next to his body. First responders attempted life-saving measures, but their efforts were ultimately unsuccessful, and John Slaw was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators began to piece together the moments leading up to the fatal incident. While the official cause of death was pending a determination by the Medical Examiner's Office, the Hanover County Sheriff's Office announced that they were not actively seeking any suspects in connection with the case. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Slaw's death remains ongoing.
