In the early morning hours of August 15, 2022, the life of 18-year-old Skyler Ann Merenda was tragically cut short in a violent home invasion in Gloucester, Virginia. The incident occurred at a residence on Bufflehead Drive where Merenda and her boyfriend were staying. During the invasion, Merenda was fatally shot, and a 20-year-old man, identified as her boyfriend Ramel Wilson, was also wounded, suffering a gunshot to the leg.
Born in Gloucester on October 15, 2003, Skyler was known for
her gentle and kind nature. She had a deep love for her family and enjoyed spending time with them camping, skiing, and at the beach. Her passions included reading, chorus, church activities, and participating in the NJROTC. Those who knew her described her as the essence of joyfulness, someone who consistently put others before herself and left a lasting positive impact on many lives.
The investigation into the deadly home invasion led to the arrest of Tyrell Lamont Samuel, 26, of Saluda. In May 2023, a grand jury indicted Samuel on multiple charges related to the incident. Following a three-day jury trial in Gloucester County Circuit Court, on August 2, 2024, Tyrell Lamont Samuel was found guilty of the first-degree murder of Skyler Ann Merenda.
In addition to the murder conviction, Samuel was also found guilty of several other felonies, including malicious wounding, two counts of using a firearm in the commission of a felony, armed burglary, and possession of a firearm by a felon. Four couples were present in the home at the time of the shooting. Samuel's sentencing was scheduled for November 12, 2024.
