In the early morning hours of November 27, 2022, a dispute inside a vehicle traveling along the William F. Stone Highway in the Fieldale/Bassett area of Henry County, Virginia, turned fatal. Andrae Lamont Matthews, a 43-year-old male from Martinsville, was shot multiple times during an altercation. He was driven to SOVAH Health Martinsville with gunshot wounds to his shoulder and cheek.
From there, he was airlifted to a hospital in Roanoke for further treatment, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
The ensuing investigation by the Henry County Sheriff's Office led them to identify Daryl O'Brian Smith as the primary suspect. Investigators alleged that during a fight between Smith and Matthews inside the vehicle, a firearm was produced, and Matthews was shot. The investigation was extensive, with authorities traveling as far as Texas to locate and interview witnesses.
On March 30, 2023, Daryl O'Brian Smith was arrested and charged in connection with Matthews' death. A Henry County Grand Jury returned indictments against Smith for second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. Following his arrest, Smith was held without bond at the Henry County Adult Detention Center.
