In the late afternoon of Tuesday, October 31, 2023, in Fieldale, Virginia, the life of 23-year-old Jadakuis Tysean Mitchell of Martinsville was tragically cut short. Emergency services received a call at 4:45 PM reporting a man had been shot on Tenth Street. Upon arrival, deputies discovered Mitchell with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was rushed to Sovah Health, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting pointed towards a domestic altercation.
Authorities reported that Mitchell and another man were involved in a dispute over a woman, which escalated to the fatal shooting. The man authorities identified as the suspect was 29-year-old Ka'Darrius Lee Ferrell of Dry Fork.
In the early hours of the following Thursday, law enforcement officers from the Henry County Sheriff's Office and the Martinsville Police Department conducted a traffic stop on a red Ford Taurus on Kings Mountain Road. Ferrell was found in the backseat of the vehicle and was taken into custody without incident. He was subsequently held at the Henry County Adult Detention Center without bond.
Following the investigation, Ka'Darrius Lee Ferrell was charged in connection with Jadakuis Mitchell's death. The charges brought against him were second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and discharging a firearm within a dwelling. In May 2024, a Henry County grand jury returned indictments against Ferrell for second-degree murder, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, and maliciously shooting into an occupied dwelling.
