Andre Isiah Motley, a 25-year-old male, was a corrections officer with the Essex County Department of Corrections. Tragically, his life was cut short on March 11, 1995, in Newark, New Jersey. The incident occurred when Motley intervened in a dispute between rival gangs on Wainwright Street. Caught in the crossfire, he was struck by a single gunshot to the back of the head.
His death came just one day after the birth of his daughter, leaving behind his newborn child, fiancée, parents, and siblings.
In the aftermath of the shooting, an investigation led to the arrest of a 22-year-old suspect. This individual was subsequently charged and convicted of manslaughter in connection with Motley's death. Following the conviction, the suspect was out on bail but failed to appear for the sentencing hearing, leading to a fugitive status.
The search for the convicted individual concluded on October 30, 1997, when FBI agents successfully apprehended him in Newark. Reports from the time indicate that a total of eight individuals were arrested in connection with the fatal incident that claimed the life of the young corrections officer.
