In the summer of 2011, a young life was tragically cut short on the streets of Newark, New Jersey. Dante Young, a 13-year-old male, was fatally shot late on a Sunday night in June. The incident occurred in the 300 block of South Orange Avenue, where Dante sustained multiple gunshot wounds. He was quickly transported to University Hospital but succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at 11:40 p.m. Dante was remembered by his family as a typical teenager who enjoyed playing video games.
The investigation into Dante's death suggested that he was the intended victim of the shooting, which was believed to have stemmed from a prior argument. His family was left grappling with the sudden and violent loss of their young loved one.
The community also expressed its grief and concern over the violence that had claimed the life of a child.
Within days of the shooting, a suspect was identified and taken into custody. John Brinson, a 24-year-old resident of Newark, was arrested and charged with the murder of Dante Young, as well as various weapons offenses. Authorities reported that the motive for the shooting appeared to be an argument that had taken place between Brinson and Dante concerning Brinson's girlfriend. Brinson was apprehended in the basement of a house on Renner Avenue and was held on a $750,000 bail.
