On March 27, 2014, a chaotic and violent chain of events culminated in the death of 27-year-old Antoquan T. Watson in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The incident began in the early afternoon at a restaurant in the neighboring city of Pleasantville, where police received calls about a man with a gun. When officers arrived, Watson fled in a vehicle, initiating a high-speed pursuit that would weave through multiple towns.
The chase stretched for over 10 miles, with Watson reportedly driving
erratically, running red lights, and even firing at the pursuing officers. The pursuit finally came to a dramatic end in a busy area of Atlantic City, near an outlet shopping center, when Watson's vehicle collided with another car. He exited his vehicle armed with a handgun, and despite commands from the police to surrender, he opened fire on the officers.
In the ensuing confrontation, seven officers from both the Atlantic City and Pleasantville police departments returned fire. An autopsy would later reveal that Watson had sustained 45 gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The entire incident, captured on police dashcam footage, sparked considerable public attention and scrutiny.
