In the early hours of Easter morning, April 20, 2014, a sense of tragedy befell the Millbridge Apartments in Gloucester Township, New Jersey, with the death of 29-year-old Kareem I. Coleman. A Black / African American male, Coleman was an aspiring firefighter who had recently taken a significant step toward his dream by passing the civil service exam. His life, however, was violently cut short.
Authorities responded to a call shortly after 2 a.m. and discovered Coleman in his apartment with gunshot wounds. He was rushed to Kennedy Hospital, but succumbed to his injuries. Investigators believe the incident was a home invasion that resulted in Coleman being both shot and stabbed. The community and his family were left in shock, remembering a man who was on the cusp of a promising career in public service.
The investigation into Kareem Coleman's murder has been met with significant challenges and remains unsolved.
Authorities from the Camden County Prosecutor's Office and the Gloucester Township Police have actively worked the case, including canvassing the apartment complex and distributing flyers in an effort to gather information. A reward of $1,000 was offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction, yet no suspects have been publicly identified or apprehended. The case was further complicated by the arrest of Coleman's younger brother at the scene on unrelated weapons charges, which diverted some initial investigative focus.
