In the early morning hours of an autumn day in 2015, the life of Michael Williams II, a 28-year-old man from Newark, New Jersey, was tragically cut short. On October 8th, what began as a night out at a gentleman's club in Belleville ended in a fatal shooting that would lead to a multi-state investigation and the eventual imprisonment of three men. Williams had been a patron at the Wet Bar on Belleville Avenue, where an argument erupted and spilled out into the street. It was there, in the darkness outside the club, that the dispute escalated to a point of no return.
As Williams attempted to flee the escalating confrontation, he was shot in the back. The investigation into his death was swift, and within weeks, law enforcement officials from the Essex County Prosecutor's Office and the Belleville Police Department announced the arrests of three suspects from Elizabeth, New Jersey.
The men were identified as Yanafi Mojica, who was 31 at the time, 28-year-old Armand Padron, and Nathaniel Garcia, who was 21. While two of the suspects were apprehended in New Jersey, the third, Padron, was located and arrested in Miami, Florida, and awaited extradition.
Initially, all three men were charged with murder and weapons offenses. However, the legal proceedings ultimately saw a resolution through plea agreements. Yanafi Mojica, the man who fired the fatal shot, pleaded guilty to first-degree aggravated manslaughter. He was sentenced to 20 years in state prison, with the stipulation that he must serve 85 percent of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole. His accomplices, Nathaniel Garcia and Armand Padron, pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of third-degree hindering apprehension. Garcia, after serving 491 days in jail, was sentenced to time served and placed on three years of probation. The motive for the argument that led to the senseless killing of Michael Williams II was never publicly clarified.
