In the early hours of a Tuesday in April 2016, the life of Gerard W. Jones, a 49-year-old male from Hackettstown, was tragically cut short on a street in Newark, New Jersey. At approximately 12:30 a.m. on April 26th, Jones was in the vicinity of Poinier Street when he was fatally shot. The incident was believed to have stemmed from a prior dispute.
The Essex County Prosecutor's Office and the Newark Public Safety Director's office immediately launched an investigation into the homicide.
Less than two weeks after the shooting, authorities announced a significant development in the case. On May 5, 2016, Alphonso Richardson, a 30-year-old man from Orange, was arrested and charged with the murder of Gerard Jones. In addition to the murder charge, Richardson also faced weapons offenses. Following his arrest, he was held at the Essex County Correctional Facility in Newark. A judge set his bail at $750,000, and he was scheduled for his first court appearance on May 10, 2016. The swift arrest brought a sense of resolution to the initial phase of the investigation into the violent death of Gerard W. Jones.
