On the night of March 8, 2017, the life of 38-year-old Nicole Sierra was tragically cut short in her Ringwood, New Jersey home. A female, Sierra was fatally wounded when a shotgun was fired through the glass of her front door. The incident unfolded around 11:54 p.m. at her residence on Van Dunk Lane.
Earlier in the evening, an altercation had reportedly occurred at Sierra's home between her ex-boyfriend, Clinton J. Degroat, and a male visitor. Following this dispute, Degroat, also 38 years old and a resident of Ringwood, allegedly left the premises. He is said to have returned shortly thereafter armed with a shotgun. It was then that the fatal shot was fired through the door, striking and killing Sierra.
In the aftermath of the shooting, law enforcement officials were able to recover a shotgun near the scene of the crime. Their investigation quickly led them to identify Clinton J. Degroat as the primary suspect.
He was subsequently arrested and faced a series of serious charges, including first-degree murder, possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose, and unlawful possession of a weapon.
Following his arrest, Degroat was held in the Passaic County Jail. During a court hearing, a judge denied him bail, citing the potential for him to be a threat to witnesses, despite his lack of a prior criminal record. Prosecutors detailed the events of that night, stating that Degroat's actions followed the earlier confrontation at Sierra's home. His defense attorney argued that the shooting was an isolated event, claiming he was 'acting under passion provocation.'
