Firefighters, after extinguishing a blaze that had fully engulfed a white Audi, found the bodies of two men inside. The victims were later identified as 25-year-old Antonio Vega Jr. and his friend, 27-year-old Aaron Anderson, both residents of Paterson. The investigation quickly revealed a brutal crime; both men had been shot execution-style before the car was intentionally set on fire.
The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office ruled their deaths a double homicide. Antonio was a Hispanic male.
The vehicle in which the two men were found was registered to Kim DePaola, a personality from the reality television show 'The Real Housewives of New Jersey.' However, it was her son who had been using the car. Reports indicated that Vega and Anderson had driven him to the airport the night before their bodies were discovered. Hours after that drop-off, a sequence of events unfolded that ended their lives. The motive for the killings was believed to be robbery. The tragic loss devastated their families, who remembered Antonio as a loving and dedicated father to his young daughter.
The investigation into the double homicide led Paterson police to two suspects, Clarence Williams, 26, and Gerry Thomas, 28, both also from Paterson. They were arrested and faced a battery of charges, including murder, conspiracy to commit felony murder, robbery, arson, and weapons possession. The subsequent legal proceedings brought some measure of justice, though it was not straightforward. In 2018, Gerry Thomas was convicted on multiple counts, including felony murder, and sentenced to an 80-year prison term. However, his conviction was later overturned by a state appellate court due to issues with his police interrogation, granting him a new trial.
Clarence Williams, the second suspect, chose a different legal path. He pleaded guilty to lesser charges of aggravated manslaughter, conspiracy, and weapons offenses. As a result of his plea deal, he received a sentence of 14 years in prison. The case, with its connection to a reality television figure and the brutal nature of the crime, drew significant attention, leaving a lasting scar on the community and the families of the two young fathers who lost their lives.
