In July of 2017, a tense situation unfolded in a quiet Washington Township, New Jersey neighborhood, culminating in the death of 45-year-old James Appis. The events began to unfold when police investigated an armed robbery that occurred on July 17 near the Hastings Square complex. Authorities, with the assistance of K-9 units, tracked the suspect to a residence in the Wimbledon area.
The suspect was identified as James Appis, and when officers attempted to make contact, he refused to exit his home, beginning a standoff that would last for 24 hours. Throughout the prolonged encounter, police made numerous attempts to negotiate with Appis and convince him to surrender peacefully. However, their efforts were ultimately unsuccessful.
After exhausting all other options, law enforcement officers made the decision to enter the apartment. Inside, they discovered Appis deceased from what was determined to be a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound.
A search of the residence revealed the presence of multiple firearms and ammunition.
Further investigation into Appis's background revealed a man with a troubled history and several encounters with law enforcement. At the time of his death, he was facing charges for the armed robbery that led to the standoff. He had a prior conviction for aggravated assault stemming from a road rage incident in 2010, for which he had served nearly a year in jail and was prohibited from owning firearms. Additionally, he had pending charges from a 2015 incident in which he was accused of stabbing a friend in the neck. Just a month before his death, Appis had pleaded guilty to weapons charges after threatening a group of teenagers with a rifle. He was awaiting sentencing and faced a potential five-year prison term for that offense.
