On what was supposed to be a night of celebration, a senseless act of violence cut short the life of 70-year-old Mary Ann Schulz. It was New Year's Eve, December 31, 2017, in Long Branch, New Jersey, and Schulz was ringing in the new year with her long-time companion, Adrian Kologi, and his family. The festive atmosphere in the Wall Street home was shattered when Adrian's 16-year-old grandson allegedly opened fire with a semi-automatic rifle, killing four people.
Schulz, a female
resident of Ocean Township, was among the victims. She was tragically killed alongside Adrian's son, Steven Kologi, 44; his wife, Linda Kologi, 42; and their 18-year-old daughter, Brittany. Schulz was a cherished friend of the family and was described as the 'life-long companion and soulmate' of Adrian Kologi. Three other individuals, including Adrian Kologi, managed to escape the home unharmed.
The teenage suspect was taken into custody at the scene without incident. Law enforcement officials reported that the victims were shot at close range in different rooms of the house. While a motive for the devastating killings was not immediately clear, the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office launched a thorough investigation into the tragic event that turned a holiday celebration into a scene of unimaginable loss.
