In the winter of 2018, a burst of gunfire on a Trenton, New Jersey street tragically ended the life of 19-year-old Ivan Rodriguez. On the afternoon of January 22nd, Rodriguez and another man, 25-year-old Jerard Perdomo-Santana, were found inside a black Ford Taurus on Ashmore Avenue. Both men were unresponsive and were later pronounced dead at a local hospital from gunshot wounds. A third individual was also wounded in the shooting but was able to drive himself to the hospital for treatment.
The incident, which unfolded in the city's Chambersburg neighborhood, was a brazen daylight shooting that quickly drew the attention of law enforcement.
The investigation that followed the double homicide led to a number of arrests and a complex legal case involving multiple defendants. Among those charged in connection with the murders were Cecil Blake, Shaquille McNeil, and Tashawn Santiago. Another individual, Lakeisha Hill, was also charged as an accomplice to the murders. The investigation uncovered a web of alleged involvement, with some individuals facing charges of hindering the investigation by providing false information to the police. Two other women, Felicita and Fantasia Gee, initially faced charges of hindering, but these were later dismissed.
As the case progressed through the court system, several of the accused faced justice for their roles in the events surrounding the deaths of Rodriguez and Perdomo-Santana. Cecil Blake eventually pleaded guilty to the attempted murder of the surviving victim and was sentenced to a seven-year prison term. Other co-defendants, Bobby Hood and Yohonaton Salter, pleaded guilty to witness tampering and received probationary sentences. The charges against the alleged primary shooters, McNeil and Santiago, along with their alleged accomplice Hill, highlighted the collaborative effort by law enforcement to bring those they believed responsible for the violent deaths of the two young men to account.
