In a tragic turn of events on a late Saturday night in March 2019, a Barnegat, New Jersey family was irrevocably changed. James M. Hammer, Sr., a 46-year-old male, was at his home when a firearm he was disassembling accidentally discharged. His wife placed a call to emergency services, reporting a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Responders arrived at the Gunning River Road residence to find Mr. Hammer critically injured.
He was rushed to the Southern Ocean Medical Center in Stafford and subsequently airlifted to the AtlantiCare Regional Trauma Center in Atlantic City for more advanced care. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, James Hammer succumbed to his injuries around midnight. The Ocean County Prosecutor's Office conducted an investigation into the shooting and officially ruled his death an accidental, self-inflicted gunshot wound, confirming that neither alcohol nor any other substances were contributing factors.
Authorities stated there was no threat or danger to the public.
James Hammer was a man deeply rooted in service to his community and country. He had a distinguished 21-year military career, serving as a Combat Veteran in the Marines, Air Force, and Army National Guard. Following his military service, he worked as a Corrections Officer for the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections and was a member of the C.E.R.T. team. He was also a dedicated member of the Barnegat Volunteer Fire Department, where he had once been recognized for his life-saving actions. Remembered for his infectious personality and big heart, he was a devoted husband and a loving father to seven children, as well as a grandfather. In the wake of his sudden passing, his family received an outpouring of support from the community.
