In the autumn of 2024, the life of Kuldeep Kumar, a 35-year-old man originally from India, came to a tragic and violent end. His family, residing in Ozone Park, New York, grew concerned when they lost contact with him and officially reported him missing on October 26, 2024. At the time of his disappearance, Kumar was seeking asylum in the United States and had an immigration hearing scheduled for the day after he vanished. He had expressed fears for his life to immigration authorities, fearing persecution.
Weeks turned into nearly two months with no word of Kumar's whereabouts. The search concluded grimly on December 14, 2024, when his body was discovered in a state of advanced decomposition within the wooded expanse of the Greenwood Wildlife Management Area in Manchester Township, New Jersey.
An autopsy performed by the Ocean County Medical Examiner's Office would later reveal a brutal end; Kumar had sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his chest, and his death was officially ruled a homicide.
A comprehensive and multi-agency investigation was launched, involving the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office, New Jersey State Police, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The collaborative effort of law enforcement led them across state lines to Greenwood, Indiana. There, between December 19 and December 20, 2024, four men were apprehended in connection with the murder. The suspects were identified as Sourav Kumar, 23, Gaurav Singh, 27, Nirmal Singh, 30, and Gurdeep Singh, 22. A fifth suspect, 34-year-old Sandeep Kumar, from South Ozone Park, New York, was arrested on January 3, 2025. All five men were charged with murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
According to investigators, the motive for the killing appeared to be an act of retaliation. The suspects allegedly believed Kuldeep Kumar was responsible for the death of Sourav Kumar's sister. The four men from Indiana were held in Johnson County Jail, awaiting extradition to New Jersey to face the charges against them, while Sandeep Kumar was lodged in the Ocean County Jail.
