In the early morning hours of May 5, 2019, a tragic shooting incident unfolded in North Bergen, New Jersey, resulting in the death of 40-year-old Carlos Garcia and injuries to three other individuals. At approximately 3:30 a.m., North Bergen Police responded to reports of shots fired at a residence on 46th Street. Upon their arrival, they discovered four victims, including an unresponsive Garcia who had sustained a gunshot wound to his torso.
Emergency medical services promptly transported Garcia and the other three victims—two men and one woman—to Jersey City Medical Center. Despite medical efforts, Carlos Garcia was pronounced dead at approximately 4:25 a.m. The other victims were treated for their injuries.
The investigation into the shooting quickly identified a suspect, Jonathan Haughey-Morales of West New York. A warrant was issued for his arrest, and he was apprehended the following day in South Whitehall Township, Pennsylvania.
Haughey-Morales was charged with murder, three counts of aggravated assault, unlawful possession of a weapon, and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose.
Following a two-week trial in March 2022, a jury convicted Jonathan Haughey-Morales on all charges related to the mass shooting. In May 2022, he was sentenced to 71 years in prison. The sentence included 50 years for the murder of Carlos Garcia and consecutive seven-year sentences for each of the aggravated assault charges on the surviving victims.
