On a late-summer Sunday afternoon in 2019, Daquan Patterson, a 27-year-old Black man from Trenton, New Jersey, was caught in a burst of gunfire outside the Donnelly Homes public housing complex along Rossell Avenue. Around 1:45 p.m. on September 22, the city’s gunshot-detection system registered a rapid series of at least fourteen shots echoing through North Trenton, an eruption of violence in a development that had already been shaken by trouble that same weekend.
