In the summer of 2019, a tragic and violent series of events led to the death of Jerand Deon Jackson in Birmingham, Alabama. On June 19, Jackson was involved in a traffic accident when his vehicle collided with a motorcycle. In the chaotic moments that followed, individuals in a second vehicle seized the opportunity to carjack Jackson.
During the carjacking, Jackson was assaulted and left injured on the roadway. Shortly after the assailants fled in his vehicle, an off-duty police officer, who was unaware of the preceding events, tragically struck Jackson with their vehicle. Emergency services were called, but Jackson succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The investigation into the complex incident led Birmingham Police to identify 32-year-old Keyton Nicole Sparks as a suspect in the carjacking and assault that preceded Jackson's death. She was subsequently arrested and charged with his murder. Authorities reported that another individual was with Sparks at the time of the incident but was determined to not have been involved in the crime and was not charged. Jackson's stolen vehicle was later discovered abandoned and burned.
