In the quiet waterfront community of Surf City, New Jersey, the serene facade was shattered by the discovery of a beloved elderly couple's brutal murder. John Enders, an 87-year-old male, and his long-term girlfriend, 75-year-old Francoise Pitoy, were found dead in Enders' home on North 7th Street in early October 2021. The grim discovery was made by police who were performing a wellness check after Pitoy's family was unable to reach her.
Upon entering the residence, authorities were met with a horrific scene. John Enders was found in his recliner, having suffered from blunt force trauma, multiple stab wounds, and a gunshot wound to the face. Francoise Pitoy's body was discovered on the landing of the stairs; she had also been shot in the face and stabbed numerous times. The home, valued at nearly $2 million, showed signs of a violent struggle, with blood spattered throughout the house.
Investigators determined that the couple had likely been deceased for several days before their bodies were found.
The investigation quickly zeroed in on a suspect close to home: John Enders' own daughter, Sherry Lee Heffernan, who was 55 at the time. Evidence, including surveillance footage of an RV traced to Heffernan near the crime scene around the time of the murders, led to her arrest in her home state of Pennsylvania. Prosecutors argued that the motive for the heinous crime was greed. Heffernan was reportedly upset that her father had removed her as the real estate agent for the sale of his valuable bayfront property and had also recently changed his will, cutting both of his daughters out of their inheritance.
Following her arrest and extradition to New Jersey, Sherry Lee Heffernan was charged with two counts of murder and weapons offenses. After a trial that detailed the strained family relationship and the financial disputes, a jury found her guilty of the murders of her father and Francoise Pitoy. Heffernan was subsequently sentenced to two consecutive life sentences in prison for the slayings, bringing a legal conclusion to a case that began with a daughter's visit and ended in a chilling double homicide.
