On a cold January evening in Neptune, New Jersey, the life of 18-year-old Samore Ariel Edwards was tragically cut short. On January 19, 2022, police responded to a report of a shooting on Washington Avenue. Arriving at the scene, they discovered Edwards and a male companion, Isaiah Williams, 19, inside a parked vehicle. Both had been shot.
Edwards, a resident of Union County, was pronounced dead at the scene. Williams was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival. The double homicide rocked the community and launched an intensive investigation led by the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office and the Neptune Township Police Department.
For months, the case remained under investigation as authorities sought information from the public. The break in the case came with the arrests of two men from the Bayshore area.
Gabriel Braithwaite, then 19, of Keansburg, and Jerod Dearin, 22, of Aberdeen, were taken into custody in connection with the fatal shootings.
The legal proceedings that followed revealed the grim details of what prosecutors described as an 'execution-style' double murder. In July 2023, both men pleaded guilty to charges related to the killings. In January 2024, Gabriel Braithwaite was sentenced to 40 years in state prison for two counts of first-degree murder. Jeron Dearin received a five-year sentence for conspiracy to commit aggravated assault. The sentencings brought a measure of closure to the families of the young victims whose lives were violently taken.
