In the early hours of a Sunday morning in Trenton, New Jersey, the life of 25-year-old Ali Abdullah was tragically cut short. On May 22, 2022, at approximately 1:00 a.m., the sound of gunfire echoed through the 100 block of West Hanover Street. Police responded to multiple ShotSpotter activations and discovered Abdullah lying on the sidewalk in a state-owned parking lot, suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was rushed to Capital Health Regional Medical Center, but his injuries proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead shortly after his arrival.
As officers were investigating the scene, a second victim, a 30-year-old male, arrived at the same hospital by a private vehicle. He had sustained a gunshot wound to his shoulder. The investigation at the parking lot on West Hanover Street revealed numerous shell casings scattered on the sidewalk. At least one of two vehicles parked in the lot had been struck by multiple bullets.
The investigation into the death of Ali Abdullah, a male, was undertaken by the Mercer County Homicide Task Force and the Trenton Police Department. In October 2022, a significant breakthrough was announced. Kahiree Peterson, a 23-year-old from Trenton, was charged with murder, attempted murder, and weapons offenses in connection with the shooting. Peterson was already incarcerated at the Mercer County Correction Center on unrelated charges when he was served with the new complaints.
The evidence that led investigators to Peterson included a crucial ballistics link. Shell casings recovered from the scene of Abdullah's murder were matched to a shooting that had occurred three days prior, on May 19, 2022, on Tioga Street in Trenton. Following this lead, the Shooting Response Team executed a search warrant at Peterson's residence. During the search, they discovered a. 45 caliber Kimber handgun and ammunition that matched the evidence collected from the homicide investigation. The Mercer County Prosecutor's Office filed a motion to detain Peterson pending his trial for the murder of Ali Abdullah.
