Lieutenant James L. Schmit, a dedicated officer with the Detroit Police Department, tragically lost his life on October 17, 1988, at the age of 41. On that fateful day, Schmit and several other officers were dispatched to an apartment at 4130 Springle Avenue to address a disturbance involving a mentally disturbed man named Charles Knowles.
