Mark Anthony Sawyers, a 30-year-old male police officer, was nearing the end of his shift on the evening of June 4, 2004. He had just wrapped up a traffic accident investigation and was parked in his patrol car in the lot of a shopping center at 15 Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue in Sterling Heights, Michigan, completing the necessary paperwork. It was in this seemingly routine moment that his life was irrevocably altered.
A vehicle pulled up alongside Officer Sawyers' cruiser, and a man armed with a shotgun opened fire without warning. A single blast struck Sawyers in the head. The assailant then stole Officer Sawyers' service weapon and fled the scene. The gravely wounded officer was rushed to St. John Macomb Hospital. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he succumbed to his injuries the following morning, June 5, 2004. He had been with the Sterling Heights Police Department for seven months, having previously served for three years with the Detroit Police Department. He left behind a wife and a young child.
The investigation into the cold-blooded murder quickly identified a suspect: Timothy Berner, a 33-year-old former U.S. Marine with a criminal history. Investigators believed Berner's motive was to acquire a handgun. Evidence suggested that he may have been stalking police officers before the fatal encounter with Sawyers. A significant manhunt was launched, with local, state, and federal authorities searching for Berner, who was considered armed and extremely dangerous. His military training was believed to be aiding his ability to elude capture.
The search for Timothy Berner gained national attention when the case was featured on the television show 'America's Most Wanted.' This exposure proved crucial in generating leads. On July 25, 2004, authorities tracked Berner to a house in Jacksonville, Florida. As a SWAT team composed of local deputies and U.S. Marshals moved in to apprehend him, Berner made a final, desperate choice. Using the very handgun he had stolen from Officer Sawyers, he took his own life, bringing a violent end to the manhunt.
