Mark Anthony Sawyers, a 30-year-old male police officer, was nearing the end of his shift on the evening of June 4, 2004. He had just wrapped up a traffic accident investigation and was parked in his patrol car in the lot of a shopping center at 15 Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue in Sterling Heights, Michigan, completing the necessary paperwork. It was in this seemingly routine moment that his life was irrevocably altered.
