In the early hours of February 8, 2015, the life of 23-year-old Allysha Danyell Tomlin was tragically cut short in what authorities would later describe as a senseless act of violence. A lifelong resident of Ypsilanti, Michigan, Tomlin was known for her vibrant personality and active involvement in her community. She was a mother to twins.
The events leading to her death began with a dispute at her home in the Sycamore Meadows apartment complex in Superior Township.
An argument had broken out between two men, one of whom was David Gordon Jr., aged 20 at the time. After leaving the residence, Gordon returned with an accomplice. In an act of retaliation, they opened fire on Tomlin's home. A bullet struck Tomlin in the head, ending her life.
The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Department quickly launched an investigation, which pointed to a possible love triangle as a motive for the conflict. Investigators learned that the initial argument may have escalated over a trivial matter involving a shoe left behind. This seemingly minor disagreement culminated in the fatal shooting.
Within days, authorities made arrests in connection with the homicide. David Gordon Jr. was charged with an open count of murder and weapons offenses. Another suspect was also taken into custody but awaited charges. Ultimately, Gordon pleaded guilty to the murder of Allysha Tomlin. The tragic loss of a young mother sent ripples of grief through the Ypsilanti community, who gathered for a candlelight vigil to honor her memory.
