In the summer of 2015, a violent encounter in Detroit tragically cut short the life of 25-year-old Edward Hogan. On July 2nd, the young father of two was shot and killed. The incident that led to his death has been described as both a robbery attempt and a dispute over a dice game. Hogan, a Black/African American male, became another victim of gun violence in the city, leaving a family to grapple with a sudden and devastating loss.
The investigation into Hogan's murder led to the arrest
of Delvon A. Carter, who was 17 years old at the time of the shooting. Carter was subsequently charged with a string of serious offenses, including second-degree murder, armed robbery, and the use of a firearm during the commission of a felony. The legal process that followed brought some measure of closure to Hogan's grieving family and the community shaken by the senseless act of violence.
In a plea agreement, Delvon A. Carter pleaded guilty to second-degree murder, armed robbery, and felony-firearm charges. This admission of guilt resulted in the dismissal of other charges, which included conspiracy to commit armed robbery and carrying a concealed weapon. Carter was handed a significant prison sentence for his role in Edward Hogan's death. For the murder conviction, he was sentenced to twenty-one to fifty years, with an additional eighteen to forty years for the armed robbery and a mandatory two-year term for the firearm offense, ensuring he would spend a substantial portion of his life behind bars.
