On the evening of April 30th, she was driving a car in downtown Tulsa when she was fatally struck by a bullet in what authorities described as a drive-by shooting. A male passenger in the vehicle with her at the time was unharmed. The incident unfolded as a tragic consequence of a dispute that did not directly involve her.

target of the shooting was actually Gutierrez-Garza's boyfriend, who was the passenger in the car. The motive appeared to stem from a belief by the alleged shooter that the boyfriend had stolen from him. This conflict tragically placed Cristal in the line of fire, a victim of a confrontation in which she was not the intended party. Her life was taken in what was characterized as a senseless act of violence.
The subsequent investigation led by the Tulsa Police Department resulted in the identification and arrest of two teenage suspects, Hao Trung Le and Ray Reyes Jr. Both individuals were charged with first-degree murder in connection with Cristal Gutierrez-Garza's death.
