In the early evening of a late summer day, what began as a minor traffic incident on a Detroit roadway tragically escalated into a fatal act of violence, claiming the life of 26-year-old Demario Tompkins. On September 6, 2015, Tompkins was a passenger in a black Dodge Magnum traveling on the I-96 service drive near Greenfield Road. Another vehicle, described as a possible white Chevy Impala, reportedly cut off the Dodge Magnum and a minor collision occurred.
Following the bump, both vehicles exited the freeway and came to a stop at a red light. An exchange of words took place between the occupants of the two cars. As the traffic light turned green, the situation took a horrific turn when shots were fired from the suspect's vehicle into the Dodge Magnum. Demario Tompkins was struck by the gunfire and sustained fatal injuries. Tragically, Tompkins' young child was also in the vehicle at the time of the shooting.
In the aftermath of the shooting, Tompkins' grieving family made emotional public pleas for the person or persons responsible to come forward. Crime Stoppers of Michigan offered a cash reward for any information that would lead to an arrest in the case. The suspect vehicle was described as a white, newer model Chevrolet Impala, possibly with four doors.
Despite the public appeals for information and the reward offered, there have been no subsequent online reports detailing any arrests or the identification of any suspects in the murder of Demario Tompkins. The case appears to have gone cold, leaving a family without answers and a community shaken by a senseless act of road rage that ended in the loss of a young man's life.
