In the quiet woods of Drummond Island, Michigan, a search for a missing U.S. Marine came to a tragic end in September 2015. Aaron Andrew Furness, a 38-year-old male, had been reported missing, prompting a search in the remote northern Michigan area where he was believed to be. The search took a dangerous turn in the early morning hours of September 24th when two U.S.
Border Patrol agents, who had joined the search, discovered footprints leading to a secluded cabin.
As the agents approached the cabin, they were met with gunfire from within. They took cover and returned fire. Aaron Furness then retreated back inside the cabin, leading to a standoff that would last for hours. Law enforcement officials made several unsuccessful attempts to make contact with him. After a prolonged period with no response, officers made the decision to enter the cabin.
Inside, they found Aaron Andrew Furness deceased. The investigation by the Michigan State Police later concluded that he had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Furness was a gunnery sergeant in the U.S. Marines with 19 years of service, including a tour in Iraq, and was based in Quantico, Virginia. No arrests were made in connection with his death as he was the sole individual involved in the armed confrontation with law enforcement.
