On the night of July 17, 2016, Hassan Al-Watan, a 26-year-old Iraqi man, was fatally shot in Detroit, Michigan. The incident unfolded at approximately 11:30 p.m. at a Fuel Depot gas station located at 18142 W. Warren. Al-Watan was behind the wheel of his Dodge Ram when a black Cadillac Escalade pulled up alongside him. A confrontation occurred between Al-Watan and the occupants of the Escalade, culminating in a male suspect opening fire.
Al-Watan was struck multiple times in the head by
the gunfire. In an attempt to flee the escalating violence, he tried to drive away but tragically crashed his vehicle into a column at a gas station across the street. He succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the crash. A passenger in his vehicle, 26-year-old Mohamed Munaser, was injured in the accident, sustaining an injury to his foot, but he was not hit by the gunfire. Munaser was transported to Oakwood Hospital and was listed in stable condition.
Following the shooting, the black Cadillac Escalade was seen fleeing the scene, heading southbound on the Southfield Freeway before exiting on Ford Road and heading westbound in Dearborn. A witness attempted to pursue the suspect vehicle and managed to obtain a partial license plate number. However, the witness was forced to abandon the pursuit when the gunman fired at him.
The motive for the deadly confrontation remains unclear, and it is not known if there was any prior connection between Al-Watan, his passenger, and the suspects. Al-Watan, who had recently moved to the United States, was a husband and father residing in Melvindale. As of the latest available reports, no suspects have been apprehended in connection with the murder of Hassan Al-Watan, and the investigation into his death is ongoing, leaving his family and community searching for answers and justice.
