In the late hours of a Saturday in November 2017, a life was tragically cut short in Pittsfield Charter Township, near Ann Arbor, Michigan. Shantel Johnson-Jackson, a 27-year-old woman, was shot and killed on November 11, 2017, following what was reported as an argument. The incident unfolded in or near a vehicle in the parking lot of an apartment complex.
Responding to a 911 call about shots fired, police arrived at the scene to find Johnson-Jackson with a gunshot wound.
She was rushed to a nearby hospital, but tragically, she succumbed to her injuries a short time later. The person who placed the 911 call was identified as Ashley Somerville, who was in a relationship with Johnson-Jackson.
The investigation led to the arrest of Somerville, who was 27 at the time. She was charged with one count of open murder and one count of felony firearm in connection with the shooting death of her girlfriend. The case moved through the legal system, culminating in a plea deal. On August 20, 2018, Ashley Somerville pleaded no contest to second-degree murder. Subsequently, on October 1, 2018, she was sentenced to a term of 12 to 25 years in prison for her role in the death of Shantel Johnson-Jackson.
