In the winter of 2017, a tragic incident unfolded in a Detroit apartment, forever altering the lives of a young family. Three-year-old Kyrei Boyd, a little boy, lost his life on December 6th in a home on Rossiter Street. The cause of his death was a single gunshot wound to the face. In the initial moments of the investigation, there were conflicting reports about how the shooting occurred.
The chaotic scene began to draw attention when emergency medical personnel, who were coincidentally across the street tending to another matter, were approached by a man frantically carrying the injured child. That man was Demetrius Lorenzo Peals, the boyfriend of Kyrei's mother. He handed the critically wounded boy to the medical team, who then rushed him to St. John Hospital, but tragically, Kyrei could not be saved. In the immediate aftermath, Peals vanished from the scene.
Kyrei's mother, Kinesha Boyd, initially told police a story of a conflict between neighbors that resulted in a stray bullet entering their apartment. However, investigators found no evidence to support her claim of an outside shot. The focus of the investigation soon shifted to what happened inside the home. It was later determined that Kyrei had been playing with a gun belonging to Peals when it discharged, causing the fatal injury. Peals, who had fled, turned himself in to the police the following morning.
Both Kinesha Boyd and Demetrius Lorenzo Peals faced legal consequences for Kyrei's death. Boyd was charged with involuntary manslaughter and lying to a peace officer. Peals faced more extensive charges, including involuntary manslaughter, second-degree child abuse, tampering with evidence, and felony firearms violations. Prosecutors alleged that Peals had left a loaded firearm accessible to the young child and had also tampered with evidence following the shooting. Inside the apartment with Kyrei and Peals at the time of the incident were Kinesha Boyd and a one-year-old child, who were reportedly in another room.
