On what should have been a night of celebration to welcome the new year, the festive sounds of fireworks in Redford Charter Township were tragically pierced by the sound of gunfire. Just after midnight on January 1, 2018, at a music recording studio situated above a furniture store on Olympia near Grand River Avenue, 27-year-old Deonta Staples was found with a fatal gunshot wound.
Emergency services were called to the scene, and Staples was quickly transported to a local hospital, but he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
Deonta, a resident of West Bloomfield, was a male and an aspiring rapper known in the local music scene by his stage name, 'Honesty.' He was at the studio, a place frequented by dozens of artists, pursuing his musical ambitions. Friends who were with him earlier in the evening recalled him being in good spirits, giving out hugs just hours before the tragic incident. His sudden and violent death sent shockwaves through his community of family, friends, and fellow musicians, who were left trying to comprehend the senseless act.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led Redford police to a suspect. Authorities arrested 45-year-old Ricardo Witherspoon in connection with the homicide. It was reported that Witherspoon and Staples were acquainted with each other, though the specific nature of their relationship and a clear motive for the shooting were not immediately made public. Investigators did suggest, however, that the incident did not appear to be a robbery.
Following his arrest, Ricardo Witherspoon was charged with first-degree murder and other firearms-related offenses. During his court proceedings, he was denied bond, ensuring he would remain in custody as the legal process moved forward.
