On the night of January 11, 2018, in Ypsilanti, Michigan, the life of 25-year-old Marissa Joy Edmunds was tragically cut short. The scene unfolded just before midnight at the University Green Apartments, where a resident's attention was drawn to two men in ski masks hastily leaving the complex. Their hurried departure into a waiting car was followed by a chilling scream, 'They've killed her!', prompting an immediate 911 call.
Responding Ypsilanti police officers arrived to a grim scene.
Inside one of the apartments, they discovered Marissa Joy Edmunds, who had sustained a fatal gunshot wound to the head. In the hallway nearby, her 26-year-old boyfriend, Maxwell Flynn, was found shot in the chest but still alive. A third individual, a 29-year-old man, was also inside the apartment with a graze wound to his head. Both injured men were transported to a local hospital and survived. Investigators determined that the assailants, described as two men in their late twenties, had stolen personal items and drugs from the victims.
In the weeks that followed, the investigation led to an arrest. In February 2018, the Ypsilanti Police Department took 29-year-old Orlando L. Whitfield into custody. He was subsequently charged with one count of open murder, one count of using a firearm in the commission of a felony, and three counts of armed robbery. Whitfield pleaded not guilty to all charges. The second suspect involved in the deadly robbery and shooting remained unidentified.
While incarcerated at the Washtenaw County Jail awaiting trial, Whitfield faced an additional charge in July 2018 for possession of a homemade knife. His murder trial experienced several delays due to motions filed by his defense team. In a subsequent turn of events, a Washtenaw County judge ordered Whitfield's release from jail on May 2, 2020, placing him under house arrest pending his trial.
