A domestic dispute on Detroit's east side escalated into a tragic and violent episode that claimed the life of 51-year-old Cynthia Ann Williams and two of her family members. The harrowing event unfolded on February 11, 2018, when an argument between Williams and her live-in boyfriend, Lance Smith, turned deadly. In a moment of crisis, Williams reached out to her mother for help, a call that would tragically draw more of her family into the escalating violence.
Responding to the plea for
assistance, Williams' mother, Barbara Ann Williams, 71, who lived next door, and her aunt, Patricia Wilson, 62, who lived across the street, came to the home. Their arrival, however, was met with gunfire from Smith. He first shot and killed Cynthia Williams inside their shared home before turning his weapon on her mother and aunt outside the residence.
The initial gunshots prompted a swift police response, leading to a prolonged and tense standoff that lasted for 14 hours. As officers arrived at the scene, they were met with gunfire from Smith, who had barricaded himself inside the house. During the protracted confrontation, three police officers were shot and wounded. One of the injured officers was Patricia Wilson's husband, an off-duty Detroit Public Schools Community District police officer who had also rushed to the scene.
The standoff concluded when law enforcement officials made entry into the home. Inside, they discovered the bodies of both Cynthia Williams and Lance Smith. Investigators determined that after killing Williams and her mother and aunt, Smith had taken his own life with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. As the sole perpetrator, Smith's death brought an end to the immediate investigation, with authorities confirming that he acted alone in the triple murder-suicide. Consequently, there were no further arrests or suspects in the case.
