On the evening of March 1, 2018, Shaun Gill, a 47-year-old male, was fatally shot at his residence in the Ports of Call Mobile Home park located in Geneva Township, just outside of South Haven, Michigan. Authorities were alerted to the incident by a woman present at the scene who dialed 911. Upon their arrival, Van Buren County Sheriff's deputies discovered Gill deceased near the front entrance of his home.
The initial investigation led authorities to believe the homicide occurred during
an attempted robbery. For years, the case remained a primary focus for a multi-agency task force that included the Van Buren County Sheriff's Office, the FBI, and Michigan State Police. A significant breakthrough in the investigation came from Gill's own home security system, which had recorded the two individuals suspected of carrying out the shooting. These images were circulated publicly in the hopes of identifying the men.
After an exhaustive investigation that spanned several years and involved conducting hundreds of interviews, authorities announced arrests in May of 2022. Jonathan Batiste Anderson, then 37, was apprehended in Niles and faced charges of open murder, felony firearm, and perjury. The second suspect, 32-year-old Patrick James Watkins, was already incarcerated within the Michigan Department of Corrections on unrelated charges when he was charged with open murder and felony firearm. A third person, 31-year-old Roxanne Marie Mills, was also charged with perjury in connection to the homicide. At the time of the charges, Mills was also an inmate in the Michigan Department of Corrections for a separate conviction.
