On a summer afternoon, the popular South Haven pier became the scene of a sudden and tragic act of violence that claimed the life of Charles 'Chuck' Skuza, a 73-year-old male. The Kalamazoo resident and his wife, Barb, were enjoying a day at South Beach on August 20, 2021, when a gunman opened fire, striking the couple in what authorities have described as a random attack. Mr.
Skuza succumbed to his injuries at the scene, while his wife was critically wounded.
The gunman was later identified as 19-year-old Aidan Ingalls of Bangor. After shooting the Skuzas, Ingalls turned the 9 mm handgun on himself, ending his own life on the pier. The incident sent shockwaves through the community, transforming a place of leisure into a horrific crime scene in an instant. There was no known connection between Ingalls and the Skuza couple, reinforcing the senseless nature of the violence.
Further investigation into Ingalls' background revealed a troubled history. In 2018, at the age of 15, he had been the subject of a police investigation after his mother discovered a disturbing plot. Ingalls had formulated a plan to carry out an attack on Paw Paw High School, complete with a 'hit list' and a cache of weapons and explosives. His mother's intervention led to his arrest. Despite facing multiple felony charges, he was not tried as an adult. A therapist who evaluated him at the time noted that he suffered from significant mental health challenges, including anxiety and depression. Ingalls had been released from probation just weeks before the fatal shooting at the South Haven pier.
